BW&A helped the sponsor of this rehabilitation of the historic and formerly vacant ‘Cal Johnson’ Building, to close on FHTC equity financing to aid in delivering 8 units of market rate housing above restaurant space to downtown Knoxville, TN. The namesake of this building, built in 1898, is one of the most successful black entrepreneurs in history. Born into slavery, Cal Johnson rose from essentially a post-war gravedigger to an accomplished horse racer (as owner and jockey) and saloon owner, and died one of the state’s wealthiest men.
